Olivia Madison Elected Treasurer of Midwestern Higher Education Compact

Commissioner Olivia Madison (IA), 2017-18 TreasurerOVERLAND PARK, KS; MINNEAPOLIS, MN and AMES, IA – Olivia Madison, professor emerita and dean emerita of Library Services for Iowa State University, was elected the treasurer of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) on November 13, during the commission’s semi-annual meeting held in Overland Park, Kansas.

One of four regional higher education compacts in the United States, MHEC (www.mhec.org) is a nonprofit regional organization assisting its 12 member Midwestern states in advancing higher education through interstate cooperation and resource sharing.

“Olivia’s commitment to higher education and service on the MHEC’s governing board will ensure a smooth transition to her role as treasurer,” said Larry Isaak, MHEC president.

Madison was initially appointed a commissioner by then Iowa Governor Terry Branstad in 2011. Governor Branstad reappointed her three times. She began serving on MHEC’s Executive Committee in 2013.

In addition to Madison, current Iowa commissioners are: Nancy Boettger, regent for the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Derrick Franck, board member of the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees; Tim Kraayenbrink, senator, Iowa Legislature; and Sharon Steckman representative, Iowa Legislature. Serving as Iowa commissioner alternates are: Andrew Baumert, vice president for marketing and outreach for the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; Jane Bloomingdale, representative, Iowa Legislature; Todd Brown, division administrator, Financial Aid Program Administration for the Iowa College Student Aid Commission; Timothy Fitzgibbon, senior vice president for First National Bank, and Wally Horn, senator, Iowa Legislature.

Legislatively created, the Midwestern Higher Education Compact’s purpose is to provide greater higher education opportunities and services in the Midwestern region. Collectively, MHEC creates solutions that build higher education’s capacity to better serve individuals, institutions, and states by leveraging the region’s expertise, ideas, and experiences through multi-state: convening, programs, research, and contracts.
