Gary Cates serves as the senior vice chancellor for Innovation and Enterprise Development at the Ohio Board of Regents. In this role he leads enterprise and innovation priorities for the University System of Ohio including the establishment of charter or enterprise universities. He joined the Board of Regents on May 23, 2011. Previously he represented Ohios Fourth Senate District, which includes all of Butler County. He also was chairman of the Senate Education Committee, and served on Finance, Highways and Transportation, and the Environment and Natural Resources committees. He also served four terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, serving as Speaker Pro Tempore for two of those terms. He began his political career as a Union Township trustee. Cates received his bachelor of science in civil engineering from Virginia Tech and a master of business administration from the University of Dayton. Senator Cates resides in West Chester with his wife Jill and sons, Andrew and Brenton.
