The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC), in partnership with Lumina Foundation’s Strategy Labs, invited MHEC commissioners and commissioner alternates to participate in a virtual learning opportunity on Friday, February 5.

Higher education needs to be seen as part of the solution to getting our economies back up and running, not the sector from which to divert resources. In November 2020, Lumina Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, working with HCM Strategists, released the report, “Higher Ed Finance in the Post-COVID Era,” offering guidance to state leaders.

In this session, an approach was shared on financing higher education that puts the needs of those most adversely affected by the pandemic at the center of decision-making, and sets them on a path for success in an economy that continues to increasingly value postsecondary credentials for successful employment.

Joining this interactive discussion were two national leaders in higher education finance – Martha Snyder, HCM Strategists and Donnie Charleston, E Pluribus Unum – along with a panel of regional leaders – Rep. Rick Carfagna (OH), Dr. Blake Flanders (KS), Rep. La Shawn Ford (IL), Dr. Kayla Hahn (MO), and Dr. Bill Pink (MI) – who discussed the challenges and necessities around this approach.
