MHECare Student Health Solutions

Created in conjunction with MHEC’s Student Health Benefits Advisory Committee (SHBAC), MHECare was established through requests from key higher education and legislative leaders seeking a collaborative region-wide approach to supporting student health and wellness. The committee is charged with exploring regional initiatives to improve higher education productivity for colleges and universities that face increasing demands for student health care. The committee consists of a wide cross section of experts in student health benefits from campuses across the MHEC states and beyond.  In 2012-13 MHECare began providing institutions of higher education access to an array of insurance solutions that assist campuses in supporting student health.

MHEC offers institutions access to programmatic options for fully insured school-sponsored plans and virtual mental health services.  Now more than ever, in light of COVID-19, access to mental health support remains critical for students. According to a recent ACHA and Healthy Minds survey, The Impact of COVID-19 on College Student Well-Being, 60% of students indicate that the pandemic has made it more difficult to access mental health care. Having adequate coverage to support this issue is imperative to supporting the overall health of college students. MHEC now provides institutions with access to a provider than can serve students’ mental health needs virtually given institutional staffing and geographic constraints.

Campuses can leverage MHECare with peace of mind that MHEC has performed its due diligence through a comprehensive and extensive RFP process, enabling student health administrators the opportunity to spend their time focused on efforts that will directly impact students.

The program is also available to postsecondary institutions of MHEC's sister compact regions in the New England Board of Higher Education, the Southern Regional Education Board, and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.
